NCM vs LiFePO4: Which Cell Chemistry Should You Choose?

How NCM and LiFePO4 cylindrical cells compare on energy density, cycle life, safety, temperature and cost — and which fits your application.

Cylindrical lithium cells come in two main chemistries: NCM (lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese, model prefix INR) and LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate, prefix IFR). Picking the right one early shapes your pack’s range, lifespan, safety and cost. Here is how they compare for B2B buyers.

Energy density

NCM stores more energy per gram and per cell, so an NCM pack is lighter and smaller for the same capacity. LiFePO4 is heavier for the same energy. Where weight or size is critical — drones, portable tools — NCM usually wins.

Cycle life

LiFePO4 typically delivers far more cycles — often 2,000–6,000+ versus roughly 500–1,500 for NCM — and tolerates deep discharge better. For daily-cycling applications like energy storage, that longer life lowers the cost per usable kWh over time. See LiFePO4 vs lead-acid for the storage case.

Safety & thermal stability

LiFePO4 has a more stable cathode and a higher thermal-runaway threshold, making it the safer chemistry — important for large packs and stationary storage. NCM is still safe in well-designed packs with a proper BMS and protection.

Temperature

NCM generally performs better in the cold; LiFePO4 can lose capacity at low temperatures (low-temperature -PL variants help). Both have charge-temperature limits to respect.

Voltage

NCM nominal is ~3.6 V (charge ~4.2 V); LiFePO4 nominal is ~3.2 V (charge ~3.65 V). This changes how many cells you put in series for a target pack voltage.

Cost

LiFePO4 uses no cobalt, so cell cost can be lower and more stable; NCM’s higher energy density can cut total pack and assembly cost where fewer, lighter cells matter. Judge on cost-per-usable-kWh over the product’s life, not sticker price.
